Presenter Topic: Infrastructure Gone Wild: Inside Look at Wildlife Crossing Projects
Join South Bay Engineers Club for a wild ride through one of the most fascinating intersections of civil engineering, transportation planning, and environmental design. Discover how BKF Engineers are helping wildlife safely cross highways with innovative wildlife infrastructure.
Attendees will gain insight into how engineers are integrating transportation systems to improve safety for both wildlife and motorists. We’ll explore real-world projects like VTA’s SR 17 Wildlife and Trail Crossings project along with I-5 Wildlife Crossing Infrastructure Assessment & Implementation Plan, both include design challenges, transportation impacts, and solutions that make these crossings possible. Whether you're into concrete, corridors, or conservation, this is one lunch and learn you won’t want to miss!

| Presenter Bios: Jaggi Bhandal PE, LEED AP Ever since his first trip to the Canadian Rockies, Jaggi Bhandal has been passionate about the design and implementation of wildlife crossings like the ones he saw in Banff National Park. Now, he’s helping bring that vision to life across California. As a civil engineer with deep experience delivering Caltrans and public infrastructure projects, Jaggi focuses on weaving thoughtful environmental considerations into practical, constructible designs. He’s led complex, multi-agency efforts that balance habitat connectivity, safety, and long-term performance—ensuring infrastructure serves both people and wildlife. His collaborative approach and strong understanding of regulatory requirements make him a valuable partner in advancing the next generation of integrated transportation solutions. Currently, Jaggi is leading northern California's first major highway wildlife crossing project, VTA’s SR 17 Wildlife and Trail Crossing. |
| Amir Abdollah, PE Amir brings over a decade of engineering design experience with a strong focus on delivering impactful public infrastructure projects that balance mobility, safety, and environmental stewardship. His work includes bike and pedestrian overcrossings, trail connections, roadway improvements, and utility coordination—each requiring thoughtful integration with surrounding natural systems. Amir has supported the planning and design of several wildlife crossing efforts in California, helping to ensure these projects meet agency standards while supporting habitat connectivity. With a proven ability to navigate funding requirements, regulatory approvals, and multi-agency coordination, Amir plays a key role in advancing infrastructure that respects both environmental and transportation goals. |
