Thomas Niesar, P.E., Water Supply Supervisor for the Alameda County Water District
Thomas will present on how the drought is affecting how water management is handled. His presentation will touch on climate change impacts on existing infrastructure; the need for diversification in water supply portfolios; increased role of storage and GW banking; regional reliability (interties, shared treatment facilities); treatment needs; emerging “next source of supply” like more desalination, IPR, DPR; freeing up water markets in California; and conservation and innovation. Thomas will address how the changing landscape may influence how consultants may want to prepare for future work.
As the Water Supply Supervisor at the Alameda County Water District, Thomas oversees the annual management activities of ACWD’s water supply as well as providing recommendations to Executive Staff and the Board of Directors on technical issues regarding water supply strategy. Thomas has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from U.C. Irvine, an M.S. in Civil Engineering from UC Berkeley and is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California. Prior to his hire in 2002, he worked on urban and rural water supply projects in and around southern Africa.
